Hello Troop 4!
I hope this message finds you all healthy and everyone’s school year has started off well. In the last few of weeks, your troop leadership has been gearing up to launch our scouting year. The Troop's Patrol Leaders, Patrol Mentors, and Executive Committee have all been meeting along with many of our dedicated parent volunteers (virtually, of course) to create opportunities for you to reengage in scouting and socialize within the current ever-evolving BSA, Council and County guidance. I want to share these important dates/events so you can update your calendars immediately.
This weekend (9/18-20)
- Virtual Camping (check email for further details & greensheet from Irene McCann)
- Hike up Cowles Mountain (check email for information sent by Mike Kincaid)
We are going to kick things off with a virtual camping adventure. So dust off your tent, pitch it outside and then sleep in it Friday and/or Saturday nights and you too can get one or two nights of camping credit. In conjunction with this camping weekend we are also having a hike up Cowles Mountain. The weather is looking super nice with a high of 80°F on Saturday and plenty of sunshine. So it promises be a great weekend for everyone to ease back into scouting!
For those of you working on Tenderfoot, you can even accomplish some of the modified cooking requirements by helping fix meals at home this weekend and talking with your patrol about why it was important for each person to share in meal preparation and cleanup. BSA has made some major modifications (which you can read about here https://www.scouting.org/coronavirus/covid-19-faq/) to the advancement requirements which are designed to enable scouts to advance and thrive even during this pandemic. We should definitely be taking advantage of those changes to help keep Scouting alive and well here in America’s Finest City.
This coming Tuesday (9/22): Troop Meeting @ 6:45pm via Zoom
We are going to begin reviving our Troop meetings. Things may look a little different so please be flexible. Due to the size of our troop we are going to start by experimenting with a shortened troop meeting format to make sure important information is passed to everyone. Then we will turn things over to the Patrols. You will be hearing from your Patrol Leaders in the next few days with more specifics about your patrol meetings. In the meantime, please save Tuesday evening and plan on Zooming at 6:45PM for 15 minutes or so before we break into Patrols. Here is the Zoom meeting information:
Topic: Troop 4 Zoom Meeting September 22 @ 6:45PM

[webmaster edit: see the email blast for login information]
Tuesday (9/29): Green Bar and Parent Meeting via Zoom
Tuesday (10/6): Court of Honor via Zoom
Thank you everyone for your patience and support as we begin an unprecedented scouting year. You will be getting a more complete calendar very soon. I hope everyone has a great weekend and I look forward to Zooming with you on Tuesday!
Do A Good Turn Daily,
It has been a very tumultuous time since Troop 4 moved to postpone further our meetings in the face of the COVID on (3/12/ 20). Wow, has the situation evolved kinetically since then. So, I wanted to share a few thoughts with everyone to talk about where we are, what we can do and future directions.
Due to the ongoing challenges we face here in San Diego and across the nation due to the novel coronavirus, we will continue to postpone all of our in-person meetings for the time being. That being said, the Patrol Mentors got together and had a conversation last week. We talked about how to proceed in this new reality. So the plan is for Patrols to meet using Zoom, FaceTime and other medium to facilitate patrol level meetings.
Hello Troop 4 Scouts,
Congratulations to all of you for the continued progress during the pandemic!
The next Court of Honor (COH) is October 6th via Zoom!

Service Projects Options in September
Now that we are returning to school and Fall is almost in the air, it is time to start thinking about getting engaged in Community Service activities as a Scout. During this time, community service events are offered in alternative ways and Troop 4 will support Community Service projects that adhere to COVID-19 Safety Guidelines. Please check out two service opportunities in September you can consider. Scouts and families can follow the instructions for each to get credit.
1. I Love a Clean San Diego Coastal Cleanup: OFFICIAL 36th Annual Coastal Cleanup Day | San Diego County Simply follow the link and instructions. For service credit, sign up and let me know you did, and share with I Love a Clean San Diego and me what you did on Coastal Cleanup Day. Provide a picture of you or your Scout doing a project so we can include it in upcoming meetings.
2. San Diego Humane Society DIY Projects - Read below and follow the links provided. Decide on a project. Complete a project and send me a picture. Lastly, fill out the Volunteer Hour Logs provided in the link, and make sure to send to the Humane Society (email provided in the Hours Log) as well as to me.
There are many fun Do It Yourself projects to benefit the dogs, cats, small animals and wildlife at the San Diego Humane Society. Making and donating these requested items help the animals have a more enriched experience while in their care. These projects range from simple (dog toys, bandanas, no sew blankets/beds, treat dispensers, rabbit chews, rat hammocks, owl hoods) to more complex that require building (squirrel boxes)
Here are 4 packets that outline the various projects:
(Items may be dropped off at the San Diego Campus at 5500 Gaines Street between 9-6 daily. Please pull up to the tent at the front with your clean and sanitized items for a no contact drop off.)
Thank you all in advance for your service and have fun!
